Bible Study Center

Along with the rest of LakePointe, the Holston Class is currently studying the minor prophets.  The Minor Prophets spoke of hope and redemption in a time when the world seemed dark and meaningless. They highlight God’s sovereignty, holiness, and love. And they remind us to place our hope in the One who came and is coming again to fulfill all God’s promises.

Inductive Study Process

Look up Hebrew word definitions

  1. The inductive study process is a great system for studying the Bible on your own.  The first step is OBSERVATION - what the Scripture says.
  2. Next is INTERPRETATION - what the author of the Bible passage intended - what the Scripture means.
  3. Lastly is APPLICATION - what difference the Scripture makes in your life.

To help you understand the correct interpretation of the Scripture is discovering and considering the definition of a word in its original language.  Here are some options for you to look up words from the Bible.

Go to an online Bible study website like ones listed below and look for "study", "tabs", and "lexicons" (what the Hebrew and Greek word dictionaries are called), "concordances" and "original language tools".

  • blueletterbible.com

You may already. have some great resources tucked away on your own bookshelf, or handed down to you from a family member.  Look for these resources specifically (we've provided links to these 2 resources on Amazon for your convenience):

  • Strong's Exhaustive Concordance
  • The Complete Word Study Dictionary

Prepare your heart and mind

When studying the Bible alone in the stillness of the morning, leave your cell phone in another room (unless you're using your phone to access some of the apps and resources mentioned above).  Also, get your head and heart in a place to receive illumination from God's word.  Here's how:

  • Plan time into your schedule to study God's word.
  • Before beginning your study, go to God in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to give you understanding (see 1 Corinthians 2:12-13).

This is up to you.  If you are using a Bible app such as the popular YouVersion, you can flip between different versions of the Bible to gain greater understanding.  Here's our recommendations for Bible versions you might look into:

  • New International Version (NIV)
  • New American Standard Version (NASB)
  • Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
  • New King James Version (NKJV)
  • English Standard Version (ESV)
